Bus Whey 2002 @ DC Dragon Center

Hello angels, Kimmy B, here again with the report on DC's annual Bus Whey Event. This dance was FULL of vibes, so sit back and enjoy the review!

I arrived at DC Dragon Center around 12:30am where I met Ganja Baby, Dready T and Ms. Mocha. When we went inside, the venue was no where near full. I wondered at this time, what the hell? Usually this dance would'a' nearly ram by now but, I went ahead and chilled and tried to get some early shots!

In the blink of an eye, the venue was full of people and the vibes were almost ready to begin. Vicious, the referee was giving the rules and regulations. The other judges and myself roped in anxious for this highly anticipated event to begin.

First up was Metromedia. Metro played an OK first ten minutes, however they were never able to buss the crowd. They got some forwards but the vibe just wasn't there. I think Metro would have done better, had they not played first because that is the hardest position to play. You are, in essence, doing the early warm. They did what they could, unfortunately Saturday night this just wasn't enough.

Next up, Destiny. Andy G and Hydro started a little weaker than I would have anticipated in the first round. They did pretty well and got some forwards. The one thing I can say about Destiny Sound is that their supporters came DEEP and that is half the battle won. All in all, I think Destiny could have had a slightly stronger first 10 minutes…but hey, what ya gonna do??

Next up, Emperor with Rawborn and Jerelle…Well, I can tell you this Rawborn did the damn thing. He got big forwards for the first tune played, a vintage Emperor dub by Sanchez. Emperor garnered several forwards for their musical selections and speeches. Big up Rawborn yuh nice!!

Next up, Half Krazy…jeezam! Big, big forwards from start to finish. Slaughter G and Trigga have always been good but I think this was one of my first big shocks for the night! Damn…the crowd reaction was off the hook and these guys were just getting started. They had an almost perfect round except for Slaughters abuse of the time constraints…aside from that, the round was butta'. From hot hits to vintage the speeches and the tunes melded together perfectly…Half Krazy, you're on your way!!

Next up, King Sound…another impeccable 10 minutes as Dookie and King tore it up. They were very hype and despite a slight needle problem in the beginning of the round, they did an excellent job and got several forwards. I'm telling you, Kings Sound is a sound that you need to look out for. If you missed Bus Whey and want to know more about this sound, check out BLU.com's interview with them and see for yourself. These guys have been around for a while and the definitely have what it takes. KS, don't fret, your time soon come!

Major from Libra Love was next to touch the tables…He started off his set with the hip hop tunes that we all know and love…now remember this is a JUGGLING DANCE.. not a clash, so hip-hop is allowed and welcomed. He got a few forwards for the hip-hop, but I think the crowd got a little tired of it. Personally, I think one, maybe two hip-hop tunes then move on. I think that's where he lost the crowd. The patrons got a little bored and antsy waiting for the bashment tunes to begin. Last year, Libra Love showed great skill, especially in their second round. Unfortunately, this year they just didn't make it.

Mighty Crown was the next sound to play and I must say, Sammy T is one feisty somebody. His speech included telling the patrons that were booing him, that they were some soundman BWOYFRIEND and that him nuh waan deh wid dem. He proceeded to drop some hot ass plates on the turntables, including a slew of Bounty Killer dubs that garnered many forwards. I think he played some heavy WAR tunes and forgot that he was there to juggle, and that Bus Whey is not a clash. Mighty Crown played a great set and advanced to the second round with ease.

Last but not least Baby Wayne Movements! Now why is it, that once AGAIN, the only sound to play a DC artist on dub was from out of town? Baby Wayne played a wicked Flame dub and it got a few forwards, but damn people where is your loyalty? Don't mek Bus Whey come again next year and oonu don't have Flame pon dub. Let the lady make her paper...support her!!!! Ok, back to business…on this particular night, the vibe just wasn't set for Wayne to continue in the usual Movements fashion. Baby Wayne is a wicked juggling sound and they have been for years. Wayne is a veteran who has played in several countries all over the world. However, this just wasn't Baby Wayne's night. Bus Whey is a tough forum to compete in and Baby Wayne, just didn't "cut the mustard" this particular evening. Big Up to Father Wayne, Redface and the crew.

Second Round….Judgment or Misjudgment??

Well after judging the first round Ganja Pickney and I were damn well glad that we could take a break. With so many sounds playing so well, it made our jobs that much harder. Vicious got onto the mic to make the announcement of which sounds moved on and who got dropped. After a little mix up, Emperor, Half Krazy, Mighty Crown and King Sound/Destiny were going through….WAIT, King Sound OR Destiny were going through. This is where things got a little sticky. Vicious decides that tune fi tune will decide who advances. The outcome would go according to crowd reaction. Angels, I don't know what the hell happened here, but for a sound that got sooooooo much forward in the 1st round, they (Kings Sound) got BOOOED like hell in the tune fi tune. Now I couldn't help but think that this thing was orchestrated in some way cause damn, that was a lot of boos. Sorry guys better luck next time…somebody ball, Destiny FORWARD!!

Now for most of the second round I was in the back taking a break…jeez, this is not easy work you know! I came back just in time for the final decision, between Mighty Crown and Half Krazy…and Half Krazy got the forwards, its just that simple. They won because they were the best sound for the job. Big Up Trigga and Slaughter G…yuh mek it and I am sooo proud of you guys. Half Krazy did what they had to do and now the sky is the limit!!
